Wednesday 22nd April 2026 - Summer Term Issue 1

Headteacher Message

1,600+ Welcome Back We Missed You Stock Illustrations, Royalty-Free Vector Graphics & Clip Art - iStock

Firstly, welcome back. The children have returned from the Easter holidays well rested and ready to learn, which is wonderful to see.

I have attached a Picture News short newsletter for parents (click here), which outlines some of the topics covered in our collective worship last term. I hope you find this a useful tool when talking to your children about current affairs.

The children have been very busy. KS1 and Reception enjoyed a visit from Eden Oasis for an animal discovery session, Year 3 visited Colchester Castle, and our netball team proudly represented the school in a tournament. Please see the news items below for further information.

I have also attached the updated diary dates for the remainder of the term (click here). Please do take a moment to check these, as some dates have changed. Class Europe’s assembly will take place on 8th May at 9.00am.

Last week we had a very positive Inclusion Review from Essex County Council. As ever, the children spoke eloquently and represented the school with great pride. Teaching and learning were highlighted as real strengths, and I am incredibly proud of both the staff and the children. Thank you.

Next week, I will be writing to you with some important updates regarding attendance. You will notice that from this newsletter onwards we will be reporting weekly class attendance. We are also introducing an Early Bird Week, which I think the children will respond to very positively. Please look out for the letter with further details.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

Best wishes,

Mrs Justine Brooks

OPAL Update - Outdoor Play and Learning

As OPAL moves into the summer term, the activities are as exciting as ever. This week, the children attended an assembly where we introduced our new “soil digging bath,” and the excitement was at fever pitch.

We are very grateful to GB Finch for generously donating a tonne bag of topsoil, and we have repurposed an old bath to hold it. Thanks to additional donations of soil scoops and play plates, the children will be able to enjoy plenty of hands-on digging and imaginative play.

Mrs Boyle

Online Safety & Mental Health

What Parents and Educators Need to Know about Streaming Services

Streaming services have become the go-to entertainment choice for many families, with children often favouring on-demand platforms over traditional television. This edition explores the realities behind these services, from rising subscription costs and advert-supported tiers to the impact of autoplay and endless content libraries on young viewers’ screen time and wellbeing.

It also highlights key safeguarding concerns, including age-inappropriate material, binge watching, algorithm-driven recommendations and phishing scams. With clear, practical advice for setting profiles, PINs and time limits – alongside tips for discussing algorithms and stereotypes – this guide supports parents and educators in promoting safer, healthier streaming habits.

What Parents and Educators Need to Know about Image-Altering Filters

Image-altering filters are now embedded in everyday online interactions, from playful effects to more subtle appearance-enhancing tools. This guide examines how these features can influence perceptions of beauty and reality, particularly for children and young people navigating social media. It highlights how filtered content can quietly shape expectations and online behaviours.

Focusing on risks such as low self-esteem, social pressure and hidden advertising, the guide also addresses more serious concerns like sexualised edits and blurred boundaries between real and altered images. It provides supportive, practical advice to help parents and educators build media literacy, encourage confidence and promote healthier relationships with online content.
