Friday 17th June 22 - Summer Term Issue 4

Headteacher Message

Hello from the sunny IOW! It is an absolute scorcher here. No complaints from the children or staff about that but we have had to ensure water and sunscreen is in abundance.

The children will complete a media article on return...... suffice to say it has been a great visit.

This is my 9th five day school residential on this beautiful island. It is a real privilege to spend time with the children in this setting. They have been a super group, a real credit to their families and the school. We received a compliment to that effect at Carisbrooke Castle. Any issues have been resolved quickly and children have supported one another through the challenges.

I won't lie.... They are shattering experiences for the 6 staff, so huge thanks to the 2022 team and the school office for their hard work in preparation for the visit.

The three visits to Osborne, Carisbrooke and Robin Hill have been great experiences and the children have really embraced the challenges at the PGL centre.

You will have read the letter from Steve Huggins last week, introducing our new headteacher, Mrs Justine Brooks. I have some meetings planned with Mrs Brooks over the next few weeks as part of the handover process. I am also doing something similar at my new school, so my departure is feeling real to me now. Only 4.5 school weeks left now. I am sure you will join me in welcoming Mrs Brooks to the school family, Great Waltham is a very pleasant pace to call work.

Have a great weekend.

Mr Burden.

PS May want to let IOW travellers sleep in!

Introduction from Mrs Brooks

Dear Parents/Carers,

I am delighted and honoured to have been appointed as the new headteacher for Great Waltham C of E Primary School.  I would like to take this opportunity to briefly introduce myself and to express my enthusiasm for the exciting times ahead.

I am very passionate about education and my aim is to give each child a variety of experiences and a chance to shine during their time at Great Waltham.  I put teaching and learning as well as safeguarding at the heart of everything I do. I look forward to building on the school's strengths and continuing to work in partnership with all stakeholders.

I have two children of my own, one of whom is off to university in September, so I do have an understanding of what it’s like to be a parent of school aged children.  With this in mind, I believe communication is of the upmost importance and I will be holding a number of events over the Autumn term so that I can get to know you all and start to build a successful partnership. These will include a coffee morning / afternoon tea and I will also be available at parent’s evenings, all of which will provide an opportunity to meet you and discuss plans for the future.  These events will take place at different times, which I hope will enable most parents and carers to attend.  In addition, I will be available on the playground before and after school.

I am really looking forward to starting in September but in the meantime, I wish you all well in the coming months.

Best wishes

Mrs Justine Brooks

Curriculum

Last week, the children came back to school and enjoyed a day with the author / illustrator Simon Murray. The children enjoyed a class based workshop about design and characterisation of the creature Icky Doo Dah. The children produced some fantastic artwork and will be finishing their work in the coming weeks in school.

Class Australia’s topic this term is all about the seaside. They have explored how to stay safe at the seaside and the importance of staying hydrated. This week they have been looking at information texts about rock pools and creating their own class book. The children are really focusing on using their phonics and becoming more independent and confident with their writing.

The children in Class Antarctica have been busy planting sunflower seeds. They have been writing instructions explaining the steps they took to do this. Miss Clydesdale is really pleased with the work the children are producing.

Class Africa have been looking at the story’ Jack and the Beanstalk’ and have planted broad beans. They have re-told the story of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ using interesting vocabulary.

In Key Stage two, the children have been busy completing a range of activities. The children with Miss McCullough this week have been creating theme park rides as part of a week-long design and technology project. They have had great fun designing and creating their own models. In computing, the children continue to work on their Stop Animation Projects where they have produced mini films using plasticine models and backgrounds that they created themselves.

School Games

Last Wednesday the year 2 children participated in a minigames competition at CSAC. The class represented Nigeria and had to wave their flags and wear masks for the parade around the track. The children took part in different activities such as throwing javelins, sprinting over hurdles and long jump. They even got to go on the mini riders. They all were fantastic and enjoyed the afternoon thoroughly.

All the children who have attended football training on Mondays played in a friendly match against St Anne's Last Friday. We played 4x15 minute quarters and each so game time was shared across the 13 players. It was an entertaining game, we ended up conceding a goal near the end to lose the game 3-2. Louie F and Cherri M scored our goals.

Next week we have Sports Week, with different activities planned:

Monday - Skipping

Tuesday - Circus Skills

Wednesday - Sports Day

Thursday - Teacher led challenges

Friday - Volleyball / Olympic athlete visit

10 children from Y5/6 will compete in the Chelmsford finals for dynamo cricket next Wednesday. Each innings comprises of 40 balls bowled. Good luck to the team.

What Parents Need to Know about Virtual Reality

A free online safety guide on virtual reality.

Virtual reality (VR for short) has existed for decades, but it’s only in the last 10 years that the technology has really become publicly available. With VR’s rapid rise as a gaming and educational medium, there are plenty of unknowns regarding its use – for adults and children alike. Is it safe? How long should someone use VR for? How expensive is it? What’s clear is that VR is becoming ever more ubiquitous in everyday life: from companies using it for training to at-home fitness. Knowing what the technology is capable of is more useful than ever.

In the guide, you'll find tips on a number of potential risks such as physical accidents, premature exposure and eye strain.
