Monday 1st July 2024 - Summer Term Issue 5

Headteacher Message

On Friday, our Year 5 and 6 children returned from a very successful school journey.  All the staff were incredibly proud of them and there are many individual success stories of courage and determination.  We were so proud of how the children conducted themselves this week.  It is a big step being away from home for four nights and learning to be responsible for yourself and your belongings.  It was a full day with the children being woken at 6:45am and then completing 5 activities before lights out at 10:00pm.   Canoeing, the big swing and sensory trial were some of the firm favourite activities.   The children returned exhausted, but I’m sure that each one of them has grown as an individual in some way and have great stories of their adventures to share with their families.  Seeing the children develop in independence and resilience as the week progressed was a privilege for the members of staff who accompanied the children.  On that note I would like to thank Miss McCullough, Mrs Elmes, Mrs Martin, Miss Clydesdale, Mrs Hamilton and Mrs Goodwin who all gave up their own time and volunteered to come on the residential.  Without their careful planning and hard work, the school journey would not be possible.  At GWPS we encourage children to ASPIRE to be the best they can be and I have no doubt that with the support of the staff and their peers, each child who attended Bawdsey Manor certainly demonstrated this.

As we enter the final three weeks of this academic year, we have lots to celebrate at GWPS.  On Friday we have Class Africa’s assembly and a non-uniform day in exchange for a tombola prize for Saturday’s fete.  The choir and our Year 5 ‘Gotta Dance’ team will be performing around midday.  I know the FOGWS will be very busy this week organising everything.  I hope to see you all there.

Have a lovely week.

Mrs Justine Brooks

10 Top Tips for Parents and Educators: Promoting Physical Wellbeing

Football’s European Championship is now well underway, and this huge event could potentially get children interested in having a go on the pitch themselves – or perhaps they’re already passionate about sport. It could present a great opportunity to get young people engaged in physical activity and regular exercise, which has proven positive impacts on all facets of their health – including mental and emotional wellbeing.

With all that said, it can sometimes be difficult to get children and young people motivated to take part in sports and other exercise, but there are certainly ways to do so. This guide provides you with some top tips from our expert on how to encourage young people to stay active and remain invested in their physical welfare.

What Parents and Educators Need to Know about Pop Ups

On the internet or on social media, it’s likely that you’ve come across the occasional pop-up – promising a great deal on some product or service, declaring that you’ve won some kind of prize, or making any other number of tempting claims. This marketing tactic has been around for almost 30 years and shows no signs of disappearing any time soon.

Unfortunately, pop-up advertising carries with it various online safety risks, as we can never be certain where those links will take us or how legitimate their creators are. These ads can be especially risky for children and young people, who may not yet be able to look at such marketing with a critical eye. However, our free online safety guide will educate you on pop-ups, their associated risks, and how to safeguard yourself and young people from this phenomenon.
