Mathematics

Mathematics is important in everyday life and, with this is mind, the purpose of Mathematics at Great Waltham C of E Primary School is to develop an ability to solve problems, to reason, to think logically and to work systematically and accurately. Through our school’s ethos ‘Let all that you do be done in love’ and our lifelong values ‘ASPIRE’, all children are challenged and encouraged to excel in Maths.

New mathematical concepts are introduced using a ‘Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract’ approach; enabling all children to experience hands-on learning when discovering new mathematical topics, and allows them to have clear models and images to aid their understanding. Arithmetic and basic math skills are practised daily to ensure key mathematical concepts are embedded and children can recall this information to see the links between topics in Maths.  Learning is carefully sequenced, taking into account what has been taught before, and what knowledge and skills are needed for the next stage of our children’s mathematical development, ensuring it is accessible to all pupils from EYFS to Year 6 and develops them as mathematical thinkers.

Please find the progression maps below which are structured using the topic headings as they appear in the National Curriculum. Each document indicates what is taught in the different year groups.
