Modern Foreign Languages
Intent
At our school, we use the Language Angels scheme to deliver a broad, ambitious and engaging French curriculum. We aim to develop pupils’ confidence and enthusiasm for language learning, ensuring all children make strong progress in speaking, listening, reading and writing.
Our curriculum is carefully sequenced to build knowledge and skills over time, with regular opportunities to revisit and apply learning. We have high expectations for all pupils, enabling them to achieve their full potential and equipping them with the foundations to continue language learning beyond Key Stage 2.
We also foster curiosity about languages and cultures, helping pupils develop an understanding of the wider world and a lifelong interest in language learning.
Implementation
French is taught in Key Stage 2 using the Language Angels scheme through regular, well-planned lessons that progressively build pupils’ knowledge and skills. Lessons are sequenced to develop speaking, listening, reading and writing alongside age-appropriate grammar, enabling pupils to communicate with increasing confidence and accuracy. Pupils revisit and apply previously learnt language through carefully structured units, supporting long-term retention and fluency.
Teaching is adapted to provide appropriate challenge for all learners, with scaffolded support and opportunities for greater depth. The curriculum is regularly reviewed to ensure progression, consistency and alignment with national expectations, while fostering enthusiasm and engagement through relevant topics and cultural experiences.
Impact
Pupils build knowledge and skills over time through the carefully sequenced Language Angels curriculum. The children develop increasing confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing. By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils can understand and respond to longer spoken and written texts and communicate their own ideas using more complex language structures. Regular assessment and retrieval of prior learning to ensure that knowledge is retained and built upon, while clear progression enables all pupils to achieve well. Pupils are able to reflect on their learning, demonstrate pride in their achievements and are well-prepared for further language study at Key Stage 3.
How knowledge and skills build over time
Our French curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure that knowledge builds progressively over time. Pupils begin with simple vocabulary, nouns and basic sentence structures before moving towards more complex grammar, longer texts and independent communication. Prior learning is regularly revisited, practised and applied within new contexts, enabling pupils to secure knowledge in their long-term memory. As they move through the language curriculum, pupils deepen their understanding, extend their vocabulary and combine language skills with increasing fluency and accuracy.
Enrichment and wider opportunities
Our French curriculum is enriched through regular subject leader meetings with partner schools and strong links with our local secondary school. We have themed lessons to provide meaningful opportunities to practise language skills, support transition and inspire pupils to continue their language learning beyond Key Stage 2.
