Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE)

Intent

At our school, the intent of PSHE is to enable our children to gain the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need to develop into well-rounded members of society, who can make a positive contribution to their community. It helps children and young people to stay healthy and safe, while preparing them to make the most of their lives and careers. PSHE also helps pupils to achieve their academic potential by removing barriers to learning.

Implementation

EYFS

In EYFS, PSHE is embedded throughout the curriculum. It is largely covered in the prime area of Personal, Social and Emotional Development covering key concepts and skills around; Building Relationships,  Self-Regulation and Managing Self. The Cornerstones Curriculum materials are used to support this. 

KS1-KS2

In KS1 and KS2, PSHE is implemented through weekly lessons that follows the ‘PSHE Association Programme of Study’ for KS1 and KS2. It focusses on three core themes; Relationships, Living in the Wider World and Health and Wellbeing. This is in line with the National Curriculum, and covers the statutory RSHE. It also takes into account the needs of our children and the community/society in which they are growing up.

Children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development is also taken into account and the ‘British Values’ are promoted throughout our PSHE scheme of work. This involves children having an understanding of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of different cultures and religions. We have established ‘Class Rules’ in each classroom to ensure that children have a safe environment to talk about their feelings and opinions. Children will be able to demonstrate a healthy and positive outlook towards themselves, others and school and can proactively meet their goals.

Impact

We want our children to be safe and happy so that they can achieve their personal best in all aspects of school life. Through our teaching of PSHE, we believe that we prepare our children for the next stage in their education as well as preparing them, during this vital stage of their life, for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of an adult world. 

How knowledge and skills build over time

PSHE addresses both pupils’ current experiences and preparation for their future. The PSHE Association Programme of Study followed provides a sequenced, spiral curriculum to develop knowledge, skills and attributes, where prior learning is revisited, reinforced and extended. This is grounded in the established evidence base for effective practice in PSHE education.

Enrichment and wider opportunities

We make connections between learning in PSHE and real-life experiences children have encountered or may be likely to. Links are often made between PSHE and other subjects, most notably Science, PE, Computing and RE. We also make connections with wider aspects of school life e.g. ASPIRE Values; School Council; Celebration Assemblies and themed activities such as Anti-Bullying Week, Wellbeing Week, Sports Week, Safer Internet Day, World Book Day, charity days and school trips.
